Welcome from the Chair
Dear colleagues,
It is my pleasure to invite you to join the 1st International Electronic Conference on Metallurgy and Metals (IEC2M) that will be hosted online at https:sciforum.netconferenceIEC2M
Metallurgy and Metals play a crucial role in current technology and have critical importance in addressing major societal challenges. Among them, process metallurgy (i.e., extracting metals from their ores to make refined alloys), physical metallurgy (i.e., shaping, alloying, heat treatment, joining, corrosion protection, and testing of metals), and critical metals recovery from secondary waste streams are of outstanding importance. IEC2M will present the state-of-the-art of Metallurgy and Metals related to these issues.
IEC2M 2021 will promote and advance the exciting and rapidly changing field of Metallurgy and Metals. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Hydrometallurgy/Pyrometallurgy
2. Powder Metallurgy
3. Corrosion and Protection
4. Biobased and Biodegradable Metals
5. Metal Forming
6. Additive Manufacturing
7. Metal Failure
8. Metal Recycling
IEC2M 2021 will enable you to share and discuss your most recent research findings with the worldwide vibrant community of scientists and engineers in the field.
IEC2M 2021 will make your presentation accessible to hundreds of researchers worldwide, with the active engagement of the audience in question and answer sessions and discussion groups that will take place online.
Submitted abstracts will be reviewed by the conference committee. The authors of accepted contributions will be invited to produce an extended abstract for the conference proceedings along with a slide presentation of their work. Following the conference, outstanding contributions will be invited to be submitted for publication in Metals.
IEC2M 2021 is a new and exciting experience for me that I believe this event will contribute to the dissemination of knowledge despite the situation regarding Covid-19. IEC2M 2021 will contribute to the dissemination of research in an online environment that will maintain the same standards and structure of traditional conferences but will be more inclusive by eliminating the cost and time barriers that prevent participation in physical events.
I hope you will join us and present your work at IEC2M 2021, and be part of this exciting online experience.

sciforum-042333 | Reliability Design Of Mechanical Systems Such Subjected To Repetitive Stresses | , , , | N/A |
![]() |
Show Abstract |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The basic reliability concepts - parametric ALT plan, failure mechanism and design, acceleration factor, and sample size equation were used in the development of a parametric accelerated life testing (ALT) method to assess the reliability quantitative test specifications (RQ) of mechanical systems subjected to repetitive stresses. To calculate the acceleration factor of the mechanical system, a generalized life-stress failure model with a new effort concept was derived and recommended. The new sample size equation with the acceleration factor also enabled the parametric ALT to quickly evaluate the expected lifetime. This new parametric ALT should help an engineer uncover the design parameters affecting reliability during the design process of the mechanical system. Consequently, it should help companies improve product reliability and avoid recalls due to the product failures in the field. As the improper design parameters in the design phase are experimentally identified by this new reliability design method, the mechanical system should improve in reliability as measured by the increase in lifetime, LB, and the reduction in failure rate. |

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Digital Image analysis is used, among other things, to see how an object's surface changes over time. This technology can be applied to metal forming. A complete literature review of the recent advances in the application of such image analysis to metal forming processes is presented. We analyze how researchers apply the technique to different tests (tensile, bending, or fatigue tests), observing the advantages it presents compared to conventional methods, as well as the advances that have been made regarding the methodology used throughout the last years, including an analysis of the different existing patterns and their application procedures. We found that the image analysis has great applicability and that, in addition, the data obtained through it have high reliability when compared with numerical results. In the paper, the advantages of using Digital Image analysis applied to metals characterization are reviewed, and some examples of using this technique are also presented. |

sciforum-042607 | Effect of Initial Microstructure on Soft Annealing of a Low-Carbon Bainitic Steel | , , , , , , | N/A |

Show Abstract |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A low-carbon bainitic drilled steel exhibits high hardness after hot rolling, which is not conducive to machining. In order to soften this type of drilled steel less than 260 HB and accelerate the subsequent soft annealing, a pre-austenitizing was designed based on thermodynamic calculations of phase stability.Different initial microstructures were prepared with three austenitizing temperatures (680 oC, 850 oC, 1000 oC) and three cooling methods (water quenching, oil quenching, and air cooling). The effects of initial microstructure during annealing with different temperatures and times on microstructures and mechanical properties were studied. The softening equations as a function of λ-value was established for different initial microstructures, and the relationships between annealing temperature, annealing time, activation energy and hardness were explored. The predicted hardness were consistent with the measured values. The initial microstructures affect activation energy, i.e., the activation energy for diffusion with respect to the martensitic structure was less than that of the bainitic structure, and the corresponding softening rate with the martensitic initial structure was greater. In addition, the higher the carbide content in the bainitic structure, the greater the proportion of martensite in the martensite-retained austenite (M/A) structure, the more lath-shaped M/A and the less massive M/A, the smaller the activation energy tended to be. |

sciforum-042657 | Research on the friction properties of DP600 stainless steel as a function of bending angle and pin diameter | , , , , | N/A | N/A |
Show Abstract |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The rapid evolution of materials and manufacturing processes, driven by global competition and new safety and environmental regulations has had an impact on automotive structures (Body In White) manufacturing. The need for lighter vehicles, with more equipment, safer and eco-friendly at the same time, covers the entire life cycle of the car. Car and steelmakers agree that weight reduction is possible, and the solution goes through the use of new Advanced High-Strength Steels. Thinner and stronger materials lead to higher demands on stamping, the most used manufacturing in BIW parts. The use of Advanced High-Strength Steels raises new challenges, especially concerning the lubrication between the die and the sheet. To study the lubrication conditions of the stamping process a sheet metal forming simulator has been developed. The simulator consists of two cylinders that pull the strip of steel and a pin in between. The angle between cylinders can be adjusted from 0 to 90 degrees which allows analyzing the effect of the stamping angle. The pull force and velocity can be set and measured; and the peripheric pin velocity, the strain, and the strain velocity can be measured as well. In this work, the tribological properties of Dual-Phase 600 stainless steel using different lubricants have been analyzed. To this end, a Factorial Experiments Design with twelve parameters that compare the behavior of different lubricants has been run. The results showed that the friction coefficient increases by increasing the bending angle and pin diameter. |

sciforum-043114 | DETERMINATION OF THE REACTION RATE CONTROLLING RESISTANCE OF GOETHITE IRON ORE REDUCTION USING CO/CO2 GASES FROM WOOD CHARCOAL | , , , | N/A |
![]() |
Show Abstract |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The quest for suitable reductants for the extraction of iron from ores at minimal energy requirements and maximum degree of metallization is attracting growing researchers’ attention. In the present work, an attempt is made to use non-contact charcoal in the reduction of run-off mine goethite ore at heating temperatures above 570oC. The reduction mechanism adopted is in accordance with Levenspiel’s relations for the shrinking core model. The first stage is concerned with the diffusion of gaseous reactant through the film surrounding the particle to the surface of the solid where Goethite hematite is reduced by CO from wood charcoal to magnetite (3Fe2O3 + CO → 2Fe2O3 + CO2). The second stage involves the penetration of a gaseous reactant through the blanket of ash to the surface of the unreacted core where magnetite is reduced to wustite (Fe3O4 + CO → 3FeO + CO2). The final stage is the reaction of the gaseous reactant with solid at the reaction surface, which is described by the stoichiometry equation where the product consists of fluid and solid (FeO + CO → Fe + CO2). This non-contact charcoal reduction approach is adopted to maximize the benefit of using CO/CO2 gases from charcoal for reduction without the need for beneficiation and concentration. The rate-controlling steps for the reduction kinetics of average particle size 5, 10, 15, and 20 mm at 570, 700, 800, 900, and 1000oC are studied after heat treatment of the ore-wood charcoal in activated carbon reactor at total reduction time of 40 minutes based on literature. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis are done to investigate the spectrometric phase change and metallic components of the ore sample after reduction, respectively. The average percentage metallic iron content of 56.6, 60.8, and 61.7% and degree of metallization of 91.62, 75.96, and 93.6% are achieved from the SEM/EDX analysis of the reduced ore sample at reduction temperature of 570, 800 and 1000oC, respectively. The sharp drop in the degree of metallization of the reduced ore samples is observed at intermediate temperatures 700, 800, 900oC of the reduction. This indicates the tendency of high carbon deposit at the wustite stage of the reduction process at the least temperature and residence time of 5700C and 10 minutes, respectively. This study demonstrates that diffusion through the ash layer is the controlling resistance of the overall reduction process. |
